The transmission thermal grating formed by the self-intersection of the injection beam (A1 and A3) in the thermal cell acts as a diffraction element to form a ring cavity. The absorbing thermal cell was the same as described previously, using the acetone and copper nitrate solution with a 74% transmission factor. The principle of operation of the ring cavity is that it can produce oscillation of a lasing mode (A2 and A4) in the backward direction when the net loop gain (GTT2h) is greater than unity, where GT is the total (saturated) gain of the ampli ers and h is the diffraction ef ciency of the thermal grating. By setting the NRTE to have low forward transmission, it is possible to create an optimum combination of grating diffraction ef ciency and low saturation of the ampli ers by the injection beam, while setting the backward transmission to near unity ensures
